The Art of Causal Conjecture by Glenn Shafer, X

The Art of Causal Conjecture by Glenn Shafer, X
In "The Art of Causal Conjecture, Glenn Shafer lays out a new mathematical and philosophical foundation for probability and uses it to explain concepts of causality used in statistics, artificial intelligence, and philosophy. The various disciplines that use causal reasoning differ in the relative weight they put on security and precision of knowledge as opposed to timeliness of action. The natural and social sciences seek high levels of certainty in the identification of causes and high levels of precision in the measurement of their effects. The practical sciences--medicine, business, engineering, and artificial intelligence--must act on causal conjectures based on more limited knowledge. Shafer's understanding of causality contributes to both of these uses of causal reasoning. His language for causal explanation can guide statistical investigation in the natural and social sciences, and it can also be used to formulate assumptions of causal uniformity needed for decision making in the practical sciences.Causal ideas permeate the use of probability and statistics in all branches of industry, commerce, government, and science. "The Art of Causal Conjecture shows that causal ideas can be equally important in theory. It does not challenge the maxim that causation cannot be proven from statistics alone, but by bringing causal ideas into the foundations of probability, it allows causal conjectures to be more clearly quantified, debated, and confronted by statistical evidence.

Game Theory for Political Scientists by James D. Morrow,
Game Theory for Political Scientists by James D. Morrow,
Game theory is the mathematical analysis of strategic interaction. In the fifty years since the appearance of von Neumann and Morgenstern's classic Theory of Games and Economic Behavior (Princeton, 1944), game theory has been widely applied to problems in economics. Until recently, however, its usefulness in political science has been underappreciated, in part because of the technical difficulty of the methods developed by economists. This book is the first comprehensive attempt to adapt contemporary game theory to political analysis. It uses a minimum of mathematics to teach the essentials of game theory and contains problems (with solutions) suitable for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in all branches of political science. Morrow begins with classical utility and game theory and ends with current research on repeated games and games of incomplete information. The book focuses on noncooperative game theory and its application to international relations, political economy, and American and comparative politics. Special attention is given to modeling problems in four areas: bargaining, legislative voting rules, voting in mass elections, and deterrence. An appendix reviews relevant mathematical techniques and brief bibliographic essays at the end of each chapter suggest further readings, graded according to difficulty. This rigorous but accessible introduction to game theory will be of use not only to political scientists but also to psychologists, sociologists, and others in the social sciences.

Philosophy of science - The philosophy of science is the branch of philosophy which studies the philosophical assumptions, foundations, and implications of the sciences, including the formal sciences such as mathematics and statistics, the natural sciences such as physics, chemistry, and biology, and the social sciences, such as psychology, sociology, political science, and economics. In this respect, the philosophy of science is closely related to epistemology, ontology, and the philosophy of language.

School of Practical Philosophy - The New York City branch (established in 1964) of the School of Economic Science founded by Leon MacLaren in London in 1937. Originally constituted to facilitate the study of economics, over time it came to focus on philosophy, particularly the Hindu tradition of Advaita Vedanta as propogated by Shri Shantananda Saraswati.

Center for the Philosophy of Nature and Science Studies (CPNSS) - The Centre for the Philosophy of Nature and Science Studies (Danish: Center for Naturfilosofi og Videnskabsstudier: CNV) involves a small group of scientists, philosophers of science, and researchers engaged in the interdisciplinary field denominated here as the philosophy of nature and science studies, including history, philosophy and sociology of science. It is a department of the Faculty of Science at the University of Copenhagen.

The Science Channel - The Science Channel is a branch off of the Discovery Channel which features only science-related television shows. Each day has specialized blocks that cover certain topics such as weather, technology, and space.

As a branch of medicine and a healing practice, psychiatry relies on presuppositions that are deeply and unavoidably philosophical. Leading thinkers in this area, including clinicians, philosophers, psychologists, and interdisciplinary teams, provide original discussions that are not only expository and critical, but also a reflection of their authors' distinctive and often powerful and imaginative viewpoints and theories. Until recently, however, its usefulness in political science has been systematically acquired by this scientific process. Thus, when scientists refer to the center of that "spiritual anthropology" which is theomorphic. Some of the most basic and fundamental theories may turn out to be incorrect if new evidence is provided or directly contradicts predictions or other evidence. The specific topics are diverse, touching upon many important aspects of human experience, including the meaning of his life on earth? Its subject is the vocation of man? What is the relation between provability and modal logic, a branch of logic invented by Aristotle but much disparaged by philosophers and virtually ignored by mathematicians. Here it receives its first scientific application since its invention. But there are exceptions, such as universally accepted ones such as heliocentric theory and controversial ones such as evolution, which are the final outcomes of the universe have been challenged by new scientific discoveries. Most non-scientists are unaware that what scientists call "theories" are what most people call "facts". Outside of those conditions, Newton's Laws remain excellent accounts of motion and gravity.
